Information technologies place into the hands of the consumer the capacity to become a producer of cultural objects. The line dividing the two functions increasingly is blurred. In the 1970’s, audiocassette technology enabled consumers to copy vinyl records onto cassettes that were often of higher quality than the cassettes available at a cost from the recording companies, and could do so as many times as one wished.
